This stage of training is the hub of the Smith Training Method. All of the disciplines taught at this first stage of training are utilized to develop polished bird dogs. Dogs are introduced to birds, pointing, backing, quartering, developing a cue for whoa, recall, and heeling mannerly on a loose lead. This is the ideal place to begin your training with the Smith Training Method.

This seminar walks attendees through the second stage of training where the steadying process is begun in the field. This is where the mechanical cues taught in the Foundation Level of Training are transitioned to the remote cue of a training collar. To participate in this seminar dogs need to have completed the whoa post series and be ready to be handled in the field with remote cues.

This third and final stage of formal training teaches handlers how to put the finishing touches on their bird dogs. At this level dogs transition to game birds, transition to having birds shot over them, and all cues are transitioned to the neck. Dogs at this level can be finished at any desired level of steadiness.
